MADE is an organisation dedicated to improving the quality of our towns, cities and villages. We believe that a high quality built environment is essential for economic prosperity and wellbeing.
Well-designed places function better, use fewer resources, encourage investment and enterprise, engender social interaction and a sense of community and make people happy, healthy and proud. A high quality built environment is essential to the prosperity of all our cities, towns and villages. In the Midlands there is a lot to be proud of in our historic towns and villages and in some excellent new buildings and public spaces. However, in large parts of our cities and towns we face a legacy of post-industrial dereliction, highway domination, disconnected development, dismal architecture, cluttered and poorly-maintained public space. There is a lot of work to do to put this right.
Places Matter is devoted to generating a strong sense of place in living, working and leisure environments throughout the North West of England. We work across all sectors to drive up the skills, promoting good design and encouraging strong client leadership. We hold regular monthly meetings and additional special sessions on request.
Creating Excellence provides practical assistance in support of good design and effective community engagement to make better places and communities. CE operates throughout the South West of England, from Gloucestershire to Cornwall.
CE runs the Creating Excellence South West Design Review Panel which it created in 2005 to raise design standards in architecture and the built environment by giving guidance on major schemes at proposal stage. It also runs the CE Housing Excellence Design Panel that offers design review and Building for Life Design Support, particularly useful to support masterplan preparation and reserved matters applications.
As part of the Design Network, CE has been awarded funding to focus efforts on increasing the skills and learning of councillors, planning officers and communities in improving design quality and delivery outcomes.
CE has recently undertaken the Sid Valley Neighbourhood Plan Place Analysis. CE has been the regional hub for empowerment and engagement work, initiating Funding South West, and the South West Localism Group.
CE was set up in 2004 as the region’s centre of excellence on regeneration, funded by the South West Regional Development Agency. Now independent, it has adapted and continues to adapt. It is a social enterprise and a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee.
